Our business has taken the #SurchargeFree pledge. We don’t surcharge our customers. Find out why – www.surchargefree.com.au.
With summer coming, many of our guests are choosing to ditch darker locks in favour of lighter shades. As easy as it sounds, such colours require specialist care and an alternative to a “normal” colour service.
A little known fact to salon guests is that hair colour cannot lighten previously coloured hair. Be it salon colour, or supermarket colour from a box, once permanent colour is on your hair, it’s not as easy to go lighter, which is why we are here! So you want to lighten your previously coloured hair? Here’s how it works at Cobaarz.
You will first have a consultation with your colourist. First we will analyse your hair. Check out your existing colour, your natural new growth, and determine if your hair’s condition can support a colour cleanse service. Make sure that if we ask a question, answer it the best you can. We don’t judge if you have coloured your hair yourself, we just need to know what has been on it so that we can tailor your colour pathway to get the best possible result. The existing darker colour needs to be removed from your hair. We will talk to you about your wishes, and give a realistic solution. Sometimes the desired shade is unachievable, and we are totally upfront and honest about your results right from the start, and work toward a mutually agreed goal.
“Hang on a second, is this STRIPPING my hair? Is this a bleach bath?! Isn’t that damaging?!”. In a word, no! We use Aveda’s Enlightener to remove artificial colour from your hair, which is not a bleach or a stripper at all. In fact, it’s based on natural chemistry, and contains protective oils. We do not believe there is a place in salons for traditional stripping or bleach bathing, our method is the most damage-free and gentle method available today.
Once we establish a target shade, the first step begins! Our gentle Aveda Colour Cleanse formula is applied to previously coloured hair, and remains on until the hair lightens enough to support the agreed target shade. The timing for this step varies from guest to guest, but we constantly monitor this process. When “ready”, we remove the colour cleanse formula, and prepare the hair with a pre-treatment. After drying, your newly-cleansed hair is ready for the target shade!
As you can imagine, this process takes a longer time than a normal service. We recommend a consultation prior to taking the big step to go lighter, and we can give you an estimate of the time and the costs involved. A colour-cleanse is generally a once-off service, and after your target shade has been reached, it will not need to be repeated.
Please mention that you wish to lighten your coloured hair when you are making an appointment, and our team will do our best to accommodate you. Call 5622 2255 for your obligation-free consultation!
We are often asked about this age-old dilemma. “There’s no difference between this and the stuff in the supermarket, right?”. Well there is. A big one. And we think that now is the time to speak up. Supermarket vs Salon, the big showdown! Let’s hear the myths and facts.
Myth: They have the same ingredients anyway.
Fact: They don’t. If they did, then we would stock and recommend them, and make loads more profit than we do! Whilst they state they have proteins, essential oils, and in some cases organic components, they are generally “bulked up” with detergents, and foaming agents to make your hair “squeaky clean”. Sure, they will clean your hair, and in a sense leave it slippy with a conditioner, but I’m afraid that generally that’s how far they go. Some even leave a build up on the hair shaft, which can play havoc with future colour services. You wouldn’t believe it until you have seen red hot foil packets swelling up with product dripping out… a scary reaction if we have ever seen one!
The ingredients in our Aveda Shampoo and Conditioner are 99% plant derived. Whilst natural, they are high-performance, and nourish both the hair and scalp. Each range targets a specific guest need, and the ingredients allow it to do that. We have a pure-scription method taught by Aveda to help identify needs in our guests, and recommend accordingly.
Myth: Salon Shampoo and Conditioners are much more expensive.
Fact: In a sense, yes they are. But think of it this way; While the initial outlay is definitely more, they do last a lot longer, which many guests comment balances out in the long run. Because our Aveda Shampoos and Conditioners are super-concentrated, only a tiny amount is needed. Even conditioner…and yes, even on your long thick hair.
Generally speaking, depending of course on how often you wash and condition your hair, a regular sized bottle of shampoo and conditioner should last at least three months if used correctly. Seriously! It’s all about protecting your investment. Why pay for a premium hair colour to literally wash it down the drain.
Myth: But this one is colour-protect. Surely it will keep my colour in?
Fact: It may, but is that a chance you want to take with your newly-coloured hair? We have had a guest return a week after a colour service, with heaps of fading. After re-colouring their hair, we have sent them away with Aveda’s Colour Conserve system. No more fading. Turns out it was the shampoo and conditioner stripping out the colour molecules.
Myth: All Hairdressers are trained to sell, and don’t care about anything else but the sale.
Fact: We can’t speak for all hairstylists, as some are like this. We aren’t all tarred with the same brush for no reason! However after some of us having worked in salons where the “hard sell” is encouraged, we actually hate it and train our apprentices NOT to be this way. Our products speak for themselves. It is our duty to recommend, give samples when available, but that is where we draw the line. In fact, at times we have STOPPED guests from buying unsuitable products for their hair type, and not taken the sale. We think this is a far more professional approach to hair care. Ask. Recommend. Sample. And leave it up to the guest.
So there you go! The Myths and Facts about Shampoo and Conditioner. These are just a few of the differences, but we thought it was a good starting point. Happy haircare! x x
Once a blonde, always a blonde. Blondes, whether platinum, ash, gold, highlighted, or enhanced with pastel tones, subject their tresses to a lot. High maintenance as it is, it is something that we choose to live with, and love! Colour processes every four to six weeks can take it’s toll, and powerful bleaches and lightening agents drain hair of its shine, elasticity, and at times, it’s structure. It’s about time that we got smart with this.
Let’s talk about bleach. Yep, that nasty word that makes our hair, our scalp, and our lungs cringe. Basically, its not great. Traditional synthetic bleach, when mixed with hydrogen peroxide reacts with the melanin in our hair, and thus lightens it. However, the chemicals are notoriously harmful to the hair, and can actually break down the structure, causing snapping, stretchy hair, and generally will leave it in a weakened condition. They can also be damaging to the scalp, and cause reactions. The hair is also toned with a synthetic colour, which is not so nice on an already sensitised scalp. But we do it, because we love being blonde. And there is no alternative, right?
Wrong! Thankfully for us, Aveda has a colourist’s secret weapon called “Enlightener Powder Lightener”. It works by using natural chemistry without the hair-scare factor. The active synthetic ingredients found in traditional bleach have been replaced by ingredients that have been derived from plants and minerals. Conditioning agents have been added using Jojoba, Sunflower seeds, and castor oil, which help to look after the hair and scalp during processing. For on-scalp applications we add Aveda’s “Enlightener Creme Booster”, which helps it process quicker, and will also sooth the scalp with menthol, and blue chamomile. Enlightener has a pleasant aroma, which is derived from plant ingredients, and includes peppermint and rose.
But does it work? YES! We can achieve super light, clean and soft blondes with Enlightener. And after toning with Aveda Full Spectrum Deposit Only or Permanent colour, it is shiny, smooth, and STILL feels like HAIR! An Aveda Botanical Therapy treatment later and you’re good to go. We also recommend Aveda’s Damage Remedy System and Blue Malva Colour Conditioner to care for you blonde at home.
Be it highlights, full head applications, or pre-lightening in preparation for this season’s pastel tones, Enlightener is a far more gentle alternative to traditional bleach. We can also use this in colour correction work, where it will replace a traditional “stripper” normally used to lighten off existing colour and tone in hair.
We don’t personally believe that there is a need for traditional bleach anymore. Better result + healthier hair = blonde’s best friend. If you have any questions regarding bleach, Aveda’s Enlightener, or blonding processes, contact us via www.cobaarzaveda.com.au.
